ICT Barriers in South African Education

Our country is facing a vast issue when comes to ICT (Information and Communication Technology), that mean there are barriers or challenges that contribute to inadequate of ICT skills. Most students whom grown up not knowing computers mostly are those from rural areas due to the following factors; lack of subject teachers trained to integrate computers into different learning areas, lack of computer literacy among teachers and the absence of a properly developed curriculum for teaching computer skills.

Other key factors inhibiting schools from acquiring computers are:

-An absence of electricity
-Lack of funding
-Insufficient building space
-Lack of available and trained staff
-Poor security

Despite the lack of resources, teachers at schools generally express positive feeling about the value of computers at schools, the reason about why schools must use computers is to help prepare students for tertiary level as well as future because it awkward to those students who start to use PC at tertiary, they found it difficult to adapt the usage of it. Our country must emphasize the integration of ICT with education so that teaching and learning process must emerge especially in rural areas and that might also emerge most rurals infrastructure.
